WAXING DO’S & DON’T
Hey #BrooklynBeauties, as laser hair removal becomes more effective and affordable, there seems to be less and less information out there about waxing. We at Brooklyn Beauty Bar love waxing and is still seen as one of our primary beauty services, especially for those clients that they just can’t seem to get the best results from laser. On that note, I wanted to discuss some Do’s and Don’ts that will ensure you have the best waxing experience of your life?
Let it grow. Hair that is too short may not be removed properly, which means it will grow back sooner. Don’t get a wax until your hair is at least a quarter of an inch long, as this is the ideal length for the wax to get a better grip on the hairs and pull it out from the root. Instead of it just breaking at the surface.
Exfoliate 24 hours before your wax. This will allow any hairs tucked under dead skin to be lifted, making it easier to come out during waxing. The better the exfoliation, the easier it is to wax away the hair as dead skin can trap hairs causing ingrowns.
Moisturise. It’s very important to keep your skin hydrated and supple to make waxing a smooth process. Dry, cracked skin can cause the hair to break off rather than lifting completely from the root, which means regrowth will occur much faster.
Wear loose clothing. Pulling up those tight skinny jeans is a no-no. We need to let our skin breathe as much as possible. We should really avoid tight fitting clothes for the next 2 days, so remember to wear something loose fitting and comfy to your next waxing appointment.
Avoid exfoliating your skin afterwards. We know, never thought you’d hear us say not to exfoliate, but we just mean for the first couple of days after your wax. Waxing is a form of an exfoliation itself since it removes the topmost layers of the dead skin with your hair. This however, makes the skin more sensitive to damage from any kind of scrubbing. A few days after waxing, we recommend you exfoliate 2-3 times per week in between appointments to keep those ingrowns away.
Never shave between appointments. Shaving will make your hair grow back short and stubbly, making it stubborn to remove when waxing and also extra painful. If there is an emergency and you need to shave, leave a minimum 2 weeks before booking a waxing appointment.
Avoid products with fragrances. This includes perfumes, lotions and shower gels that contain fragrances or artificial colours. These ingredients are a major no-no for your freshly waxed skin to avoid irritation.
Sweating. You’ve got the perfect excuse to skip your workout without feeling guilty! Intense workouts are a really bad idea after a wax as they can cause friction on waxed areas and sweat can get caught in the pores that cause bacteria which can lead to breakouts.
Swimming. Our skin can be more prone to bacteria and infection for the few days after a wax as the pores are open and exposed, so avoid getting to the pool or spa.
Sun. Our skin is super sensitive straight after a wax and sensitive skin is more susceptible to harmful UV rays. Sun damage can lead to pigmentation and wrinkles so use an SPF lotion. Try Feel Good Inc. – Sensitive Sunscreen Lotion 50+ it’s perfect for problematic skin. So gentle it can be used on babies over 6 months!!
